San Diego Gulls Hockey

It’s about time that us Gulls fans had a place to flock. While SoCal never used to be a place people thought of for hockey, that has changed. When the Anaheim Ducks brought the Gulls into the league, they built a nest for us to build this fan base. The 2020-21 season has been delayed until at least February, but I for one can’t wait to get down to the Pechanga Arena and see the Gulls kick some but, especially the Reign’s butt!

The Ducks have filled this roster with talent, and there is even more to come. Last year, we had studs like Isac Lundstrom (2018 first-round pick), everyone’s favorite Max Comtois (2017 second-round pick), Troy Terry (2015 5th round pick), and Josh Mahura (2016 3rd round pick). This year we could see Trevor Zegas, who is arguable the most exciting Ducks prospect in recent memory, depending on what Bob Murray decides to do with him now that he has signed his ELC, we won’t see Jacob Perrault or Jamie Drysdale until at least next year as they can be sent back to junior hockey up in Canada, but if those leagues get shutdown who knows, maybe we get them down here in San Diego as well. If we were to add Zegras and Drysdale to this group, the Gulls could make a real push to win the Calder Cup in 2021. However, if both players end up playing in Anaheim, at least we know we can still have fun with them in our DFS lineups.

If the Gulls are going to have a successful year though, they are going to need improved play coming from their goalies. With Anthony Stolerz expected to spend the year as John Gibson’s backup with the Ducks, it’s expected that the Gulls are going to be Olle Eriksson Ek, and who knows who else. Lukas Dostal has performed well in Finland, however, he likely won’t be able to come over until the Liga season has completed. The same goes for Roman Durny who is likely to stay over in Slovakia until the season over there is complete. I look for the organization to sign a veteran goalie to play alongside Eriksson Ek, and to be the 3rd goalie in Anaheim should Gibson or Stolerz get injured. We could see someone like Ryan Miller, Jimmy Howard, or Michael Condon. If the choice is a veteran like Miller or Howard, I expect that will push Stolarz back to us in San Diego.

It should be another fun year of Gulls hockey, maybe even the best one yet, with the talent pipeline that has been put together. I know February can’t come soon enough for me, as it has been far too long since I waived my orange, black, and blue flag and cheer for my Gulls.
